The first Congress was organized by ILO and ISSA in 1955

In 1955, the International Labour Organization (ILO) and the International Social Security Association (ISSA) established the World Congress on Safety and Health at Work as a global forum to advance worker health protection. Since then, the Congress has opened its doors to the world every three years, each time hosted by a different country.  It has become one of the world’s largest events for the international occupational safety and health community--attracting thousands of delegates from across the world.

This year’s Congress is organized by the Institute for Work and Health (IWH), the Canadian Centre for Occupational Health and Safety (CCOHS), ILO and ISSA.

The Congress was originally supposed to be organized in Toronto in autumn 2020 but was postponed and changed virtual because of the covid-19 pandemics. The Congress has four official languages: English, French, German and Spanish. The hashtag for the Congress is #WorldCongressCA.
