Excellence in Pandemic Response and Enterprise Solutions - E3

The E3 joint innovation project brings together science and technology. Combined, they enable the creation of effective means to prevent the spread of infectious diseases. The coronavirus pandemic showed that health security is important in workplaces, society and the global economy. In order to find effective strategies against pandemics and epidemics, we need to engage in close multidisciplinary co-operation with different
experts and companies that develop risk management products.

Objectives

Our most important objective is to develop solutions that enable society’s functions and allow people to continue to live safely despite epidemics and pandemics. In particular, we are developing ways to manage airborne epidemics and pandemics so that we can reduce the spread of pathogens in places where people meet.

Data and methods

  • We are developing a tool that facilitates the risk assessment and management of biological factors in workplaces.
  • For the tool, we are investigating the spreading potential of pathogens, exposure and transmission routes, virulence, health hazards and their measurement and identification methods.
  • At the same time, we are assessing ways to reduce the magnitude of the risk and protect people’s health and work ability in hazardous situations.

Results and impact

  • We produce information, solutions and tools that can be used for the development of work life and society.
  • The developed solutions and tools take health and safety into account.
  • The project will generate additional information on exposure to pathogens. It can be used to develop even better and more effective methods of risk assessment and management that reduce the risk of exposure during pandemics and epidemics.
  • Reliable and researched information is needed for co-operation with commerce and industry as well as authorities. Together, we can develop health and safety guidelines and legislation so that companies will also be able to remain operational in epidemics and pandemics.
