Occupational safety level classifications revealed – co-operation and forecasting provide good results

The Vision Zero Forum has once again granted occupational safety level classifications to its member workplaces. This year, a record-breaking 122 workplaces were granted a classification. At the workplaces that received a level classification, safety work is carried out together and good practices are shared outside the workplace, too.

Finnish Institute of Occupational Health media release 7 April 2025

A total of 122 workplaces received an occupational safety level classification, which is more than ever before. Of these, 53 workplaces had no accidents during 2024.

Workplaces that received a classification are increasingly investing in co-operation in the development of occupational safety. Lessons learned from accidents are processed together and occupational safety knowledge is also distributed outside the workplace to contractor networks, for example.

The values of the Vision Zero Forum are learning together, openness and encouraging others.

"It’s great to see that daily life at member workplaces aligns with the forum’s values.  Lessons learned about safety are also shared openly outside the workplace, and everyone is involved in safety work," says Pekka Koskela, Chairman of the Forum’s steering group.

Proactive safety work plays a key role in the prevention of occupational accidents

The number of accidents at workplaces that have applied for a level classification has remained at the same level as in the previous year, but the accidents that do occur are more serious in nature. This is reflected as longer sickness absences at the workplaces.

"Although the observation is worrying, the fact that the number of accidents remains at the same level indicates that daily life at workplaces is relatively safe. Proactive safety work can help in preventing the occurrence of serious accidents," says Tiina-Mari Monni, Development Manager from the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health.

Workplaces that have received a level classification have made efforts to prevent occupational accidents by providing training and involving personnel in the development of safety.

“It is important to communicate openly about occupational accidents and incidents at the workplace to encourage an increasing number of people to make safety observations and integrate safety work as part of daily life,” says Tiina-Mari Monni.

Workplaces will share good occupational safety practices at a seminar in May

The Vision Zero Forum is a good place to get help and ideas for promoting occupational safety and well-being at work and share ideas with other workplaces. There are already more than 560 member workplaces across Finland.

"The growth of the Forum shows, first and foremost, that workplaces want to take care of their employees and genuinely commit to the occupational safety vision zero. Workplaces that receive the level classification can develop occupational safety systematically and receive recognition for their long-term safety work," says Tiina-Mari Monni.

The Vision Zero Forum will organise a seminar that is open for all on 20—21 May 2025 in Paviljonki, in Jyväskylä. This year’s theme of the seminar is “For the love of the game”. In the seminar, workplaces that have received a level classification share good practices from their safety work.

Early Bird registration for the seminar will continue until Friday 11 April. More information and registration (in Finnish): For the love of the game seminar
