Mitä kuuluu (How are we)? Well-being at work in private social welfare and health care companies

Over a number of years, the ‘Mitä kuuluu?’ study has given a situational picture of well-being at work in the public social welfare and health care sector. Now the situational picture will become even more comprehensive, as this new study will also bring in the private sector. The study will produce a broad and cohesive situational picture of the workload and well-being at work of those working in private social welfare and health care companies. It will provide organizations with tools for strategic management of well-being and work ability and give political decision-makers means to develop the attraction and retention power of the social welfare and health care sector.

Objectives

The aim of the study is to produce a broad and cohesive situational picture of the workload and well-being at work of those working in private social welfare and health care companies. Participants will receive information on well-being at work in their own organization in relation to other private social welfare and health care companies and public social welfare and health care organizations. Organizations can use this information to support strategic well-being and work ability management.

As for political decision-makers, an up-to-date and comparable situational picture of well-being at work in the private and public sector will provide means for developing the attraction and retention power of the sector.

Data and methods

The survey will be conducted in October 2025 alongside the Mita kuuluu?’ study. A version of the Mita kuuluu?’ focus survey, adapted for private companies, will be used as the questionnaire. The questionnaire contains about 30 questions and its estimated response time is 5-10 minutes. The themes of the survey are workload and resource factors, the work community, management and work ability.

The participants’ data will be combined with the surveys conducted by the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health for a report on the situational picture of well-being at work in the social welfare and health care sector.

Results and impact

There are many challenges facing the social welfare and health care operating environment. Sudden changes such as the coronavirus crisis, together with the ageing of the population and growing need for care, pose a significant challenge to the current social welfare and health care service system.

Although national reforms, such as the establishment of well-being services counties, can solve some of the problems in the service system, labour availability remains an acute problem in the sector. In order to improve the situation, the attraction and retention power of the social welfare and health care sector must be promoted in both the public and private sectors.

Despite the fact that social welfare and health care companies play an important role as employers in the sector, as far as we know, there is no third-party data available in Finland on well-being at work in private social welfare and health care companies. Consequently, the current understanding of attraction and retention factors for the sector does not provide an overall picture of the entire social welfare and health care sector.

In this study, we will expand the situational picture of well-being at work in this sector by examining the situation in both the public and private sectors. The private sector pilot survey will be carried out in cooperation with the Finnish Association of Private Care Providers for the largest private social welfare and health care companies.
