Project

Mitä kuuluu (How are we)? Well-being at work in the rescue sector

There is a need for information on well-being at work and its changes in rescue services in order to support the strategic management of rescue services, which have been transferred under well-being services counties. This project will produce a national situational picture of well-being at work in the rescue sector and suggestions for solutions to improve the attraction and retention power of the sector.

Objectives

The objective of the well-being services county reform was

  • to improve the quality and equality of rescue services throughout the country
  • to ensure a close connection between rescue services and social welfare and health care in order to utilise the synergies achieved in emergency medical care.

In addition to the organizational reform, achieving these goals requires healthy employees who can manage their basic tasks and participate in the reform of service structures. There is a need for information on well-being at work and its changes in rescue services in order to support strategic management.

The project aims to

  • produce a national situational picture of well-being at work in the rescue sector and suggestions for solutions to improve the attraction and retention power of the sector.
  • promote the well-being of those working in the rescue sector, thus extending careers and increasing the attraction and retention power of the sector.

Data and methods

A well-being at work survey tailored to the needs of the rescue sector, to be carried out in October 2024

The survey can be used to map out and develop the well-being at work of personnel. Participants in the pilot survey will gain information on well-being at work in their own organization in relation to other rescue departments. Organizations can use this information to support strategic well-being and work ability management. The survey focuses on psychosocial workload factors for employees, cooperation within the work community, fairness in management, as well as ability to work and continue in the field. It is important to address these factors at an early stage, so that they do not lead to work ability problems and premature exits from the sector.

Participating organizations will have access to a results portal that supports the management of well-being at work, in which they can view their own organization's results by e.g. age group and in relation to the average of other rescue departments and well-being services counties.

Workshop 19 March 2025

Representatives of participating organizations are invited to discuss the results and underlying factors. Based on the workshop, improvement suggestions will be compiled to promote the attraction and retention power of the sector.

Results and impact

This study will complement the situational picture drawn by the ‘How are we?’ study on the well-being at work of employees in well-being services counties. The pilot survey will be carried out at the same time as the ‘How are we?’ survey in October 2024. A research report will be drafted on the results of the survey.

Based on the results, a workshop will be organized, in which representatives of participating organizations will be invited to discuss the results and underlying factors. Based on the workshop, improvement suggestions will be compiled to promote the attraction and retention power of the sector.

The research report and improvement suggestions to promote the attraction and retention power of the rescue sector will be published in a webinar on 7 May 2025.
